20 Healthy Snack Ideas

Ever get bored with the food that you eat on a regular basis?

I know I do.

That’s why I’ve compiled a list of some awesome, healthy, snack ideas to help reduce your cravings for the sugar junk we all love.

Good snacks are important in keeping helping you maintain your healthy lifestyle.  In between meals you are likely to get hungry and ignoring that hunger trying to get to the next meal isn’t a good idea.  Often times you’ll be STARVING and eat everything in sight which ends with you consuming far more than you would have normally eaten.

Snacks help keep your appetite stable, you’re never starving, you’re never stuffed.

A good snack will contain protein, it isn’t processed, and its something that doesn’t require a lot of effort on your part.

Without further ado here are my top 20 snack ideas for you.

20 Quick & Healthy Snack Ideas

1. Make your own Trail mix

Sure you can buy trail mix at the store, but have you seen the prices? It is stupid expensive.  So skip the store bought stuff and make your own.  Pick raw nuts, limit dried fruit 1  selection, and use chocolate pieces sparingly.  Here is my go to mix: Organic peanuts, raw almonds, raw cashews, sunflower seeds, dried raisins, and dark chocolate chips (The Enjoy Life brand is the only way to go).  Combine these in a big container that you keep in the fridge (yes the fridge, nuts go rancid) and scoop out a handful at a time for a snack.  Remember, go light on the nuts and dried fruit.

2. An apple and nut butter

This is my absolute favorite snack and how I bust through sugar cravings.  Nut butter options include peanut, almond, cashew, or sunflower butter.  Choose organic when possible, and watch the sugar content of the butter (note regular peanut butters often contain high fructose corn syrup, watch out for this).

3. Hummus and veggie sticks

Sliced sweet peppers, carrot sticks, celery sticks, and cucumber are a few of my favorite choices.  Pair them with some hummus and you’ve got a great snack idea.  My favorite Hummus?

4. Paleo Apple Pie Trail Mix

This snack mix might be one of my absolute FAV’S.  I keep it close by and grab a handful or two a day.

5. Guacamole and veggies

I LOVE guacamole.  I put it on everything from burgers to eggs.  As a snack its great with a handful of veggies (see veggie ideas from #3) plus avocados are filled with good fat which our bodies need.  Unfortunately to make it a good snack you have to skip the tortilla chips (woh woh woh).

6. Homemade protein bars

Protein Bars

I’m a big fan of protein bars, but have you ever read the nutritional labels? They are often filled with so many ingredients, namely sugar!  Its super easy (and cheap) to make your own.  Try this recipe.

Try this recipe, its been my tried and true for years.

7. Air popped popcorn.

Microwaved popcorn is terrible for you.  Read the ingredient label and you will know what I’m talking about.  An easy and delicious alternative is to buy your own air popper, a container of coconut oil, and some organic popcorn and make your own.  Top it off with a little bit of sea salt and maybe a few chocolate chips and you’ve got a great snack.

8. A turkey roll up

While I’m not a HUGE fan of copious amount of lunch meat, a little bit here and there is acceptable.  Take a slice of turkey and roll it up around an avocado slice for a great snack.   Lillian has lot of healthy ideas like this on her blog.

9.  Berries

Snacks can be super simple.  A cup of mixed berries (raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries) is one of my favorite snacks.

10. Hard boiled Eggs

This is one of those snacks that you either love or hate.  I’m on the fence.  Either way they are healthy and easy.  Filled with protein, an egg is a perfect snack.

11. Grass Fed Meat Sticks

I recommend going with a turkey meat stick if meat sticks are your jam (turkey is leaner).  These are something that are easy to throw in a diaper bag, lunch bag, whatever, and just grab and snack on.  I am a big fan of Nick’s sticks, they are local to Iowa, but can ship anywhere.

12. Frozen Grapes

Grab a kabob stick, throw some grapes on there, and then freeze for a couple hours and you have yourself this tasty treat.  No kabob sticks? Just place the grapes in a baking sheet (one with sides so they don’t roll all over) and freeze for a few hours.  Remove frozen grapes from the baking sheet and place in freezer safe bag for continued freezing.

13. Lara Bars

While I’m not a huge fan of packaged snacks lara bars are pretty good when it comes to ingredients.  They generally have 5 ingredients or less and are pretty natural for a packaged goodie.  Feeling brave? Make your own, its super easy.  Try this recipe

14. Pomegranate seeds.

This is a great treat for when the sweet tooth strikes.  All you need is a fork.  Trader Joes sells pomegranate seeds on their own if you aren’t feeling like cutting a pomegranate.

15. Sweet Potato Chips

I’m currently crushing on sweet potatoes hard core.  They are a breakfast food, a snack, a side dish, really they are the most versatile food out there in my opinion.  Homemade sweet potato chips are easy and delicious.  Try this recipe, you’ll be glad you did.

16. Clementines

So fast, easy, and delicious.  I generally eat 2-3 at a sitting

17. Green Smoothie

These are so easy to make and most recipes generally make enough for 2 servings so you can have one today and one tomorrow.  One of my current fav’s is this though I’ve been replacing the water with unsweetened vanilla almond milk and it’s EVEN better.

18. Deviled eggs

Try a recipe like this.

19. Bacon wrapped dates.

I was skeptically of this one at first, but upon further experimentation I became a fan.  Highly recommend giving this a try.

20. Grilled Pineapple

Simply one of my most favorite things on earth.  Warm pineapple with that slight flavoring of whatever was left on your grill.  Yum!
